2021 Tax Filing Dates

The IRS has announced an extension of the tax filing deadline for 2020 individual tax returns to May 17, 2021, and most states have followed suit. They did NOT extend the due date for 2021 first quarter estimated tax payments or fiduciary and gift tax returns. Maryland announced a different extended deadline of July 15, 2021. All these changes have caused some confusion so we thought we'd summarize the dates here:

  • April 15, 2021
    • 2020 Federal Fiduciary (Trust) tax return filings and payments are due. Extensions are still available.
    • 2020 Federal Gift tax returns are due. Extensions are still available.
    • 1st Quarter 2021 Federal estimated tax payments are due.
    • 1st Quarter 2021 State estimated tax payments are due for most states (NOT MARYLAND).
  • May 15, 2021
    • 2020 Federal Individual income tax return filings and payments are due.
    • 2020 IRA, Roth IRA and HSA contributions are due.
  • June 15, 2021
    • 2nd Quarter 2021 Federal estimated tax payments are due.
    • 2nd Quarter 2021 State estimated tax payments are due for most states (NOT MARYLAND).
  • July 15, 2021
    • 2020 Maryland Individual income tax return filings and payments are due.
    • 2020 Maryland Fiduciary income tax return filings and payments are due.
    • 1st AND 2nd Quarter 2021 Maryland estimated tax payments are due.
  • September 15, 2021
    • 3rd Quarter 2021 Federal and State estimated tax payments are due
  • January 15, 2022
    • 4th Quarter 2021 Federal and State estimated tax payments are due

If you are looking for guidance on a specific state other than Maryland, the AICPA has a website tracking those changes here. If you have any questions on any of this, feel free to reach out to us.
